What is Pasture Raised Chicken?
How Do We Raise Our Chickens?
Our chicks arrive from the hatchery at just a day old! We pick them up from the post office and bring them home to the brooder. The chick brooder is a warm area, about 90 degrees, where the chicks have access to feed and water. The chicks spend 2-3 weeks in the brooder. As the chicks grow the temperature inside the brooder is decreased and eventually turned off once they are big enough for outdoor temperatures. Once they are big enough, we pick a nice day to move them outside to the Chicken Tractor. The Chicken Tractor is a movable pen that keeps the chicks safe from the elements and predators while allowing them access to fresh grass. We move our chicks once or twice a day, depending on their size, to new pasture. The chicks learn quickly to move with the tractor, and are excited for new pasture! Chickens are omnivores. Their natural diets include grass, legumes, seeds, and insects. However, since they only have a single stomach they are not able to fully digest the grasses they eat, they also need to be fed grain. We feed our chickens a complete Non GMO meat bird feed. This helps them get all the protein, vitamins, and minerals they need to grow.
